When Sarah climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2012 she visited this school and fell in love with everything about it. That expedition was organised by Childreach International and, as a precursor to our trip to Tanzania in 2014, the Sarah Groves Foundation agreed to provide – in conjunction with Childreach International – a new playground, sportsfield, associated equipment and a complete set of text books.
The official opening of the playground and sportsfield was timed to coincide with our climb in 2014, which resulted in an emotional and unforgettable experience for everyone involved. The total cost to the Foundation was approximately £10,000.
School starts very early in Tanzania at 07:30 by which time many of the students have walked great distances through the bush in order to get there. And they are never late.
The Sarah Groves Foundation is planning one more investment in the Mgungani School – the provision at a cost of c£7,500, of a new classroom for the reception class which currently has to take all lessons outdoors. Donations may be made for this specific purpose (rather than on a general basis) via the DONATE section of this website.
The 27th August 2014, to the exact day two years after Sarah had visited the school was a truly wonderful and emotional experience for everyone fortunate enough to be there. Above all else, the Foundation’s contribution has truly enhanced their young lives in a visible and tangible way.
