Released by Vic Groves, Tuesday 15th March 2016 from Guernsey for Immediate Use

Media Release Starts

Today represented the 67th occasion upon which the court in Srinagar, Kashmir has convened to hear the above case.

Reports coming out of Srinagar indicate that the defendant, Dutch national Richard de Wit, has still not appointed a new defence lawyer to represent him in court. In the absence of such an appointment, the hearing could not proceed and so today represented, yet again, a day in which no progress was made.

It is understood that a meeting was held with the judge in chambers in an attempt to force the matter to a head but nothing could be done in respect of today’s hearing. Only one witness has been processed since 13th June 2015 – almost 9 months ago.

The next hearing date is not known and will be communicates as soon as it is. It is understood that representatives from the Netherlands will be present in advance of the next hearing in an effort to resolve the pressing issue of legal representation and to assess Mr de Wit’s mental and physical state of health.

A further release will be sent out if there are any significant developments on any of the matters referred to above.
